  Introduction to Species Action Plans

Species Action Plans (SAPs) have been produced for 18, of a total of 156 priority species. The vast majority of priority species have been included in the appropriate Habitat Action Plan (HAP).

The approach taken for each species was based upon consideration of the most effective way to address its conservation requirements. Most species are primarily dependent upon one or two habitats and will benefit from actions taken to conserve, enhance and restore those habitats. This is especially the case in the Herefordshire BAP because of the broad ‘area’ approach taken to producing HAPs, so that mosaics of associated habitats are generally addressed within one HAP. Actions for associated priority species, mostly for research, are also included in some HAPs.

It should be noted that these 18 species have not been selected as ‘flagship’ species, representing any habitat or group of other species, rather that a SAP was considered necessary to address their conservation needs, which would not be taken account of adequately within any one or more HAP for one of the following reasons:

  • The species is extremely localised and action taken for it must be very site and species-specific. (Pillwort, Grimmia ovalis, Medicinal leech, Greater horseshoe, High brown fritillary, Pearl-bordered fritillary and Grizzled skipper).
    .
  • The species is widespread but localised where it occurs and requires specific action. (Dormouse, Water vole and Great crested newt).
    .
  • The species is widely distributed or wide-ranging, occurring in or dependent upon a number of different habitats and may additionally be affected by factors which would not be addressed within a HAP. e.g. road kill, (Otter and Barn owl), built development (Barn owl and bats), management practices targeted at or particularly affecting that species (Otter and Polecat) or specific management required (Black poplar and Barn owl).
    .
  • The species depends upon a mosaic of habitats which occur at the boundary of a number of HAPs and has very specific management requirements. (High brown fritillary, Pearl-bordered fritillary, Grizzled skipper, Wood white and Dormouse all requiring some type of scrub mosaic, with grassland or woodland, thus bordering the edges of the Woodland / Farmland / Upland and Commons and Boundary Features HAPs).

Distribution Maps

Maps are included for all species plans for which it has been possible to produce them. It should be noted that these maps are based upon the best available information at the present time and are, in many cases, far from being definitive. Most of the Species Action Plans include actions for survey and monitoring. It is hoped that available information on species’ distribution and status will thereby be improved in the near future.
